History: A long time ago, the princess of the underground realm vanished on the surface. Her body unable to cope, she became sick and eventually died, but her father was sure that her soul would one day return. Thus, numerous portals were created around the world and waited for the princess’ return. As the centuries progressed, the portals began to be destroyed until just one was left in a civil war torn Spain. Ofelia, a young girl obsessed with fairytales, was found by the Faun. Overjoyed for finding the lost princess, he had to be sure she was the one. Thus, before the moon would be full, she had to complete three tasks.
Gifting her with a magic book that could tell the future, he sent her off. Her first task was a success and she retrieved a key from the stomach of a giant toad. Her second task, however, had an obstacle. Her pregnant mother had become ill. To help things along, the Faun gave her a magical mandrake root. As her mother became better, she ventured into the lair of the Pale Man to retrieve an ornate dagger. Unfortunately, her hunger got the best of her and she went against the Faun’s orders. She began to eat the great feast, awakening the creature.
She managed to escape with the dagger, but two of the Faun’s fairies were killed in the process. Enraged, the Faun left her. Days went by before he returned on the night of the full moon. Having decided to give her one final chance, he instructed her to gather her newly born brother and take him through the labyrinth. Once at the end, the half-goat creature told her that the blood of the innocent had to be spilled in order for the portal to be active, but she refused to let the Faun spill even a drop of her brother’s blood. At the same time, Captain Fidel, whom she had taken the baby from, finally caught up to her. Taking him from her arms, the ruthless man shot Ofelia in the stomach and left her to die. However, in doing so, he spilled her blood. The ploy with her brother was the final test and she passed. In not allowing the blood of another to be spilled for her own gain, she proved herself the real princess. As her body died, she took her rightful place in the kingdom of the underground.
