Arctic Plankton
Height: Indeterminable
Mass: Indeterminable
Crawling Speed: Very Slow
Powers:
- Accelerated Growth: Like all plant life, the arctic plankton is able to grow in both size and mass; whenever the conditions are right. Unlike more normal vegetation, this breed of flesh eating plankton is anaerobic in nature. With no heat or free flowing oxygenated air, the plant will remain dormant. But, when it is removed from the sea and placed in a normal environment that has a little bit of heat, that monster will grow unchecked. It will grow for as long as it is exposed to those elements.
Weaknesses: Being a creature that thrives in heat, the Artic Plankton is susceptible to cold. Exposure to such element will halt the monster’s growth; with continued exposure, it will even cause it to revert to its normal form.
First Appearance: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: The Price of Doom (1964)
Human Kills: 4
Fight Record: None
Home World: Earth
Origin: North Pole
Type: Natural
History: Ice-Station T was a small scientific facility that was located in the North Pole. Within the building, a brilliant scientist couple, the Panells, were experimenting with a new form of plankton that they had harvested from the waters around them. They sought to aid in a new line of experiments with the substance. It was hoped that they would unlock the secrets of plankton growth and be able to use it as a new food source for the world, a unlimited food source that would feed millions. Unfortunately, the plankton had a different plan. When exposed to several space heaters in the cabin, the vegetation grew to mammoth proportions. It devoured both of the Panells and then proceeded to trash the facility. When the power was knocked out though, the heaters stopped and caused the planet to revert back to its original form.
It was a few days later before Admiral Nelson and his colleagues arrived at the destroyed scientific facility. They took back some scattered papers, an audio recording, and a few samples of the newly discovered plankton. History would repeat itself though, as the plankton was left uncheck near a budsen burner. The plant grew to gigantic proportions in no time at all. Immediately it set out for food, letting nothing stand in its way. Even the steel walls of the Seaview were no match to the unparalleled strength of the monster.
Eventually it would make its way to the Gyro room, causing the ship to lose its buoyancy. A few deckhands were sent to investigate. This was an action that would result in one of their deaths at the spiky limbs of the giant plant. First Lieutenant Sparks was able to make it back and warn the captain of the horrible monster that was crawling about their halls. This prompted a platoon of men to go and try to stop the monster. Using fire extinguishers, they were able to hold the monster back long enough for them to fix the Gyro machine. That problem solved, the brave men retreated and attempted to devise a more permanent solution of subduing the monster.
It little time, Admiral Nelson figured out the monster’s weakness. Playing back the Panell’s audio recordings from the lab, he learned that the monster was anaerobic in nature. An addition of heat and oxygen, two of which elements are not found in the depths of the ocean, allowed the monster to grow unchecked. Cold was the beast’s weakness. Together with Captain Crane, the duo carried out a plan that allowed them to flood the compartment of the ship that they had trapped the creature in. Returning to normal size, the plankton nightmare was stopped once and for all.
