History: During the revolutionary war, German princess often sent Hessians, or mercenaries to the United States, to keep it under the role of England. One of these mercenaries came not for the money, but for the love of carnage. Dozens of brave men were slaughtered by the warrior’s wicked blades. During the winter of 1779, the butcher was finally brought down in the woods surrounding the small town of Sleepy Hollow.
After his steed was shot, the mercenary ran into the woods and was followed by several American troops. The slaughterer tried to escape and stumbled across two little girls: Crone and her sister. They disobeyed his plea for them to remain silent, and one of them broke a stick in two. The troops heard the sound and rushed into battle. The Hessian fought back, knocking off limbs and heads with his weapons until he was stabbed in the gut. Standing on just one knee, the killer was brought to an end when his head was cut off with his own sword.
Several years later, his place of burial had become a gateway into another world. His body acted like a seed of evil and the Tree of the Dead began to grow above him. Crone, as a child, was kicked out of her home with her family after her father died, while the Van Tassels moved into their home. Vowing revenge, as an adult she dug into the horseman's grave and stole his skull. Slowly and surely, she moved her way up to gain everything on both the Van Garret and Van Tassel will, all the while using the Hessian’s skull to control the resurrected Headless Horseman.
The first victim was Van Garret and his son, the week after, the Widow Winship whom Van Garret married secretly. The news of the gruesome deaths reached New York City, and Detective Ichabod Crane was dispatched by his superiors to unravel the mystery with the use of his scientific methods. On the same night of his arrival, a fourth victim was claimed: Jonathan Masbath. Even after examining the body, Crane wasn't convinced that a murdering ghost was behind the killings, even with the neck wound cauterized with no scorching or blistering. Scared and confused, Magistrate Philipse attempted to flee the town. When confronted by Crane and questioned, the Horseman arrived, showing himself to the now believing detective. With a single slash of his blade, the Magistrate's head was cut off and Crane lay passed out on the ground.
After Crane awoke, he went on a search to find the Hessian's grave, along with Young Masbeth and Katrina Van Tassel. They eventually found the grave, and just as they unearthed it, the Headless Horseman burst from the Tree of the Dead, on his way to retrieve his next batch of heads!
The targets were a small family of three. The Horseman burst into the home and made quick work of the husband. Hidden in her child's room, the mother tried to hide her child via a trap door. The Horseman killed her too and then went to work cutting the floor to pieces with his axe. Retrieving the terrified child, the Horseman claimed his eighth victim!
As he left the house, he was then confronted with a bullet to the chest from Brom Van Brunt, a man also set to stop the vengeful spirit. Nothing he threw at the murdering Hessian stopped it though. The ghost simply recovered from the shot and defended against a back attack with a simple swipe of his hand, but the Headless Horseman refused to kill Brom. After having his own blade thrown into his leg, Brom grabbed a pair of scythes just as Ichabod arrived to try and help against the Headless Horseman by using a large, staffed scythe.
The fight, however, was pointless. The two mortals fled, but together they had angered the spirit. The Horseman followed them across the bridge and stabbed Ichabod before tossing him aside like a rag doll. Brom tried to fend him off once more, but was quickly cut in two.
The Horseman came again a few days later, but now for Chrome's husband: Baltus Van Tassel himself, after Crone faked her own death by the ghost's hands. The town ran to the church, guns emerging from the windows and firing upon the specter. Unable to step foot on the holy ground, the Headless Horseman broke the pointed tip off one of the fence posts and tied a lasso around the wooden object. While Baltus stood before the masse inside, the Hessian speared the man with the post! As the crowd watched on in horror, Baltus was dragged out of the window and within reach of the horseman. Swinging his blade, the horseman collected his head.
At last, Crone was soon to have everything, only one body stood in her way: her stepdaughter Katrine. After kidnapping her and revealing her fiendish plot, the Horseman came. Young Masbath tried to save her, but failed. Ichabod, having finally figured everything out just when he was to return to New York City, arrived. He rescued the pair and helped them escape while setting fire to the windmill. As they watched on from outside, the structure collapsed in a great ball of fire!
Despite the carnage, the Headless Horseman emerged from the blaze unscathed. Unable to die, the spirit took chase on his devilish stallion. The chase led back to the Horse of the Dead where Crone interfered, knocking Ichabod down and offering her stepdaughter to the Hessian. As he lifted his blade, Ichabod fended off Crone and retrieved the horseman’s skull. Gaining the specter’s attention, he tossed the skull into the hands of the ghost. Placing it back on his shoulders, the villain had finally recovered his own head.
Calling his steed, he pulled the unconscious Crone onto the stallion. As she woke, the slaughterer kissed her, using his filed teeth to sever her tongue! Roaring like an animal, the horseman drove his horse and his victim into the Tree of the Dead, returning to the fiery depths of Hell.
