History: According to an ancient Chinese legend, on the full moon of the seventh lunar month, the gates of hell open and the spirits of the dead are freed to roam among the living. This night became a festival in China where the locals would leave out animal sacrifices for the Pale Figures to slaughter, keeping them away from the human families inside the homes. However, the released souls didn’t just want sacrifices, but for every moon, they’d take one human and turn them into one of their own.
Tiring of this yearly taking, the locals began to lure outsiders to be taken instead. On the last seventh moon, two honeymooners got drawn into the madness: Melissa and Yul. After being abandoned by their guide Ping, the pair was forced to fend for themselves. Returning to their car and finding it covered in blood, the two drove the dark road until wrecking when swerving to miss a humanoid figure in the road.
They managed to drive away and discovered a stranded man also fleeing from the terrors of the night, but the figures drove them back into a ditch, getting their car stuck. The trio managed to escape into an empty barn, but the ghostly creatures surrounded the structure and tried to break in. The three were split up when the stranger distracted the figures, allowing Melissa and Yul to escape back to their stuck car.
The figures, however, followed the stranger back to the car and dragged him into the darkness before returning, ripping the vehicle apart to get at the trapped lovers. As the souls ripped through the windshield, the pair escaped out of the trunk and ran into the darkness, hoping to find some shelter to last until morning. They soon found it in a sort of shrine where they thought they’d be safe, but instead the people inside gave the pair to the demons.
As the demons grabbed both of their heads, Yul began to chant in Chinese, and as Melissa watched on, the creatures gashed his head and dragged him into the darkness. Reuniting with Ping, the old man told her what the demons had in store. Knowing he wasn’t dead, Melissa followed the candle trail back to their cave and found her lost loved one and the immobile creatures. The demons were inside his head, slowly converting him into one of their own! Yul told her to leave as he died, and as she exited the cave, the creatures stirred. A slew of the Pale Figures chased her through the darkness until she bumped into Ping whom had tried to save her.
The creatures tore him limb from limb.
When she made it out of the cave, the creatures followed her in hot pursuit. They charged over the ground until the moon finally lowered and sun began to rise. The souls began to vanish and as Melissa stood up, the sun rising, Yul stood, completely changed. Taking her eyes away for just a brief moment, Melissa looked again and her loved one was gone and the nightmare ended.
