History: For many years, Richard and Anna Morgan failed to produce a child. However, after one of their trips abroad, the couple returned home with a baby. They claimed Samara was adopted, that her mother died in childbirth, but it was a lie. Samara’s mother had been placed in an institution for trying to kill her child. As the girl aged, Anna began to see horrible things whenever around her daughter. As even stranger things began to accumulate whenever Samara was around, her father locked her up. He kept her in the barn where she began to despise the horses that kept her awake at night. Soon, a disease overtook the island’s horse population.
At some point, both Samara and Anna were admitted to a mental hospital where all treatment failed. The pair returned home, but Anna could no longer handle it and threw her daughter into a deep well and left her to die. For seven days, Samara remained in the dark hole until death overcame her. Decades later, a cabin retreat was built over the well and modern technology, including VCRs, was brought to the structure above her watery tomb.
Even in death, Samara’s powers were wicked. Her soul transferred her thoughts and rage into a videotape. A curse was created with it: whoever watched the tape would die exactly seven days later. After her friend was mysteriously killed, Rachel Keller began to investigate the cause of her death. She found the tape and even made a copy of it, but was unable to decipher everything within it. Teaming with her ex-boyfriend Noah, a media-related expert, they slowly began to unravel the clues of the tape until her young son, Aiden, also watched the VHS. Rushing against the seven day clock, the pair tracked Samara’s home to Moesko Island and tried to approach her father, but he refused to help.
After he killed himself in front of Rachel, she and Noah discovered Samara’s barnyard room and a picture of a tree burnt into the wall. Recognizing it as the same one from the tape and outside the cabin in which the tape originated from, they returned to the cabin and uncovered the well hidden underneath the floor. Just as time ran out for Rachel, she discovered the skeletal remains of the little girl within the water. The curse was seemingly lifted. Local authorities would give the remains a proper burial, but while Rachel was free, Samara was now unleashed! Her curse would never stop.
She killed Noah and while Rachel figured a way out to beat the curse for her son by making a copy of the tape with him and have somebody else watch it, the angry spirit would never go away. Overtime, numerous copies of the tape began to spread about the country while Rachel and Adrian moved to a new home in Oregon. However, when a body of a teenager was found with the same look of horror on his face, Rachel realized the nightmare was far from over. Samara no longer wished to kill Aiden, but now possess him, believing that Rachel was her true mother for she was the one who actively sought her out and “saved her.”
When Samara finally managed to take over the mind and body of her son, Rachel began to dive deeper into the history of the dead girl. She even tracked down the birth mother of Samara and found her locked up in a mental hospital. Realizing the only way to free Aiden of Samara’s possession is to kill him, she drugged her possessed son and drowned him. Samara quickly left his body, allowing her to revive him but the angry spirit soon returned. The television in the living room turned on and Samara began to crawl out of it! Determined to put an end to the madness, Rachel reached out to the spirit and was dragged into the world of Samara’s videotape!
They both plummeted into the well where Rachel saw that the lid of the well was always open. As she began to climb, Samara emerged from the water and began to follow. Pulling away at the rocks, Rachel managed to send a wave of water crashing down onto the ghost and submerge her again. As she climbed out, Samara began scaling the walls again but it was too late. As she cried out “Mommy!”, Rachel slid the covering of the well shut, sealing off Samara forever and putting an end to the curse.
