History: In an ordinary, suburban home of Tokyo, a family of three lived happily. Takeo and Kayako Saiki, along with their son Toshio and pet cat Mar, couldn’t have been happier until Kayako fell in love with another man. She began to write letters and follow her son’s teacher, Peter Kirk, and hoped to eventually start a new life with him. Unfortunately, when Takeo discovered her secret diary, he snapped. The man went on a rampage and murdered his family. He broke Kayako’s neck and drowned both Toshio and Mar before hanging himself.
However, when a person dies in a fit of rage such as he, a curse is born. The three souls continued to exist while Kayako began to kill anybody that entered the home. Peter soon discovered the bodies of the dead and committed suicide while three officers investigating the grisly crime scene also died mysteriously in the following days. Three years later, an American family moved into the now-haunted home. When a caretaker to the family went missing as well, another was dispatched by the company.
Karen Davis was also targeted by the angry spirits and stalked by Kayako while the family was killed off one-by-one. When the police uncovered the missing bodies in the attic, Kayako began to haunt the head detective. After viewing a tape that captured footage of the ghostly woman, Detective Nakagawa attempted to burn the house down. However, he was lured away from the canisters of gasoline and killed by the spirit of Takeo.
When Doug, Karen’s boyfriend, left a message stating he was going to the house to look for her, the American rushed to the haunted home and was quickly put within a living flashback, showing the gruesome events that led up to the curse. Upon its end, she found her lover terrified and unresponsive before Kayako began to crawl down the stairs. The woman struggled to escape, but managed to tip over the canister of gasoline and ignite it! A furious fire broke out, but before the house could be completely destroyed, local authorities managed to douse the blaze and rush Karen to the hospital. While Doug died, she remained in intensive care until she awoke.
When Karen’s sister, Aubrey, arrived in Tokyo, the curse had become even more intense. Kayako killed Karen and continued to slaughter anybody that entered the home. Determined to uncover the truth behind her sister’s demise, Aubrey tracked Kayako’s childhood home and even spoke with her priestess mother who used to expel demons from innocent people via the use of her daughter. While she insisted this had no relation to what Kayako had become, the vengeful spirit killed her mother and soon Aubrey also, but the American would become a dark spirit just as she did.
Two years later, three young girls ventured into the house and also became cursed. One-by-one, the evil claimed them until one, Allison Flemming, fled Japan and headed back to her home in Chicago. The curse followed her and began to affect the apartment building, making normal people filled with rage and eventually murderous. Kayako soon claimed Allison, but left one survivor: Jake Kimble. The young boy was put in a mental hospital, but the curse soon claimed his life a few months later.
However, back in Japan, news of the tragic death reached Naoko Kawamata, the younger sister of Kayako. Determined to put an end to the curse and its killings, she traveled to the United States and rented an apartment within the same complex where the Kimbles lived. As the curse continued to expand and claim lives, she sought to use the young Rose to contain and stop the curse. However, at first, her older sister Lisa refused to let her be part of any such thing.
That all changed when their older brother. Max. became possessed by the spirit of Takeo. In the midst of the ceremony, he interfered. Realizing what was to happen, he attacked and killed Naoko while Kayako cornered Lisa. Just as the vengeful ghost was about to kill the young woman, Rose returned to the room and drank from the bowl containing the blood of Kayako. Instantly, the curse was lifted and contained within her. However, as the spirit of Takeo vanished from Max, a new curse had been created. Taking the place of Kayako was the angry spirit of Naoko but the curse of Kayako would be contained within Rose until her death.
