History: In the early 1960’s, a tragedy struck the small town of Valentine Bluffs. Two supervisors of the local mine left their posts, allowing a group of miners to venture deep inside unaware of a growing pocket of methane. When ignited, all but one of the men were trapped and killed. Harry Warden survived on his own, cannibalizing the corpses of his friends and co-workers until rescued. When freed, he was insane and placed in an insane asylum. Unfortunately, he escaped. He returned to Valentine Bluffs and slaughtered the supervisors that had left their posts. He also left the town a grim warning to never celebrate Valentine’s Day again.
For twenty years, the warning was heeded. The legend of the mad man began to dwindle and most believed he had been captured and locked back up. The younger generation of miners began to long for a renewal of Valentine’s Day and a dance was organized. Quickly and surely, the bodies began to appear. Harry Warden was, seemingly, back. Cutting the hearts out of his victims and leaving them in heart-shaped candy boxes, the killer demanded the festivities be ended.
When the dance was officially canceled, the party was moved to the mine offices. Stalking the young people, the miner killed several and followed the rest into the darkness of the labyrinths. When they finally caught on, it was too late. Trapped and isolated, they were picked off one by one by the mad man. Seemingly down to just Sarah and T.J., he fought to protect the girl from the pickaxe-wielding psychopath. Managing to remove his gasmask, it revealed that the murderer wasn’t Harry Warden, but T.J.’s former friend and Sarah’s boyfriend Axel, who as a young boy had witnessed his father, a supervisor at the mine twenty years ago, be brutally murdered.
During the fight, the entrance to the mine collapsed. Axel’s arm was caught underneath the tons of rock. As Sarah reached for his arm, it suddenly pulled away. Using a knife, the miner amputated it. From a small hole in the collapse, they could see Axel retreating into the darkness of the mine, babbling about Harry Warden and his love for Sarah.
