Martian Amoeba
Height: Indeterminable
Length: Indeterminable
Mass: Indeterminable
Crawling Speed: Slow
Powers:
- Dissolve: Having no mouth and no way to actually feed on its prey like a normal creature, the Martian Amoeba resorts to virtually pulling its victims into its gooey body where its acidic properties quickly kick in. It can dissolve an adult human in less than a few minutes. Should just a small piece of the amoeba touch a victim, it will slowly dissolve the flesh while growing. However, this process takes several weeks.
Weaknesses: None
First Appearance: Angry Red Planet (1960)
Human Kills: 1
Fight Record: None
Home World: Mars
Type: Alien
History: Lurking in the depths of a vast Martian lake, the creature emerged from the water as a raft of four Earthlings tried to reach a populated Martian city. It quickly took chase, following its prey to the shore and through the lush jungles. Fleeing for their lives, the strangers to the world sought sanctuary in their rocket ship. However, just as they arrived, it caught one of them! The other three watched on in horror as their crewmate was dissolved alive within its ugly mass. As the doors locked shut, the slimy creature engulfed the ship. Slowly but surely, it would eat through the haul and reach its victims.
As the hours slowly progressed, Col. O'Bannion devised the plan to electrocute the outer haul of the ship. The intense flow of electricity was enough to drive the giant amoeba back. Proving themselves able to survive the planet, the Martian civilization that had erected a force field around the ship and prevented its departure allowed them to leave and take the warning to never return back to Earth.
However, during their escape from the amoeba, a piece of it touched O’Bannion’s arm. It was just a small spot at first, but as the days in space increased, it threatened to overtake him completely! By the time they reached the Earth, the creature had become so large that electricity couldn’t be used without killing the man. However, remembering her experiments with amoebas prior to the journey, Dr. Iris Ryan devised a plan to use slight electric shocks to lure the amoeba onto an equally sized piece of meat that could then be destroyed. The plan ultimately succeeded, saving the man’s life and ending the growing threat of a Martian Amoeba growing to full-size on Earth.
