History: As an infant, Joe and his family befriended Dr. Ruth Young and her daughter Jill. However, one foggy night, a band of poachers killed both Joe and Jill’s mothers. Left orphaned for life, the pair became best of friends and the remarkable ape grew to an enormous, legendary size. Becoming a sort of guardian of the forests, Joe became a living myth. And as he protected the forests and the animals within, Jill watched over the ape, making sure no poachers could ever claim his life as well.
However, when an American-funded group arrived and discovered the immense ape, they tried to capture him. Professor Gregory O’Hara chased down the towering gorilla with a convoy of vehicles, but the beast proved too powerful and evasive. Following Joe on foot through the lush jungle, the professor was caught by the creature. Thankfully for the brash man, Jill interfered and made her friend drop him.
After befriending both Jill and Joe Young, O’Hara convinced her to take Joe to a wildlife refuge park in California. Once there, the massive primate befriended the staff of the sanctuary, but the poachers that killed his mother had learned of his existence. Seeking revenge on the beast for biting off his thumb and trigger finger, Strasser also befriended Jill and the poachers enraged Joe whenever they were alone. Forcing the beast to go on a brutal rampage during the night of a huge fundraiser, Strasser got his wish and talked Jill into allowing him to take the ape.
However, during the transportation, she realized who the man truly was. When she escaped the poachers, Joe spotted her from the back of the truck and began to rock the vehicle, eventually flipping it over. On the run, Joe was a stranger in an even stranger world. Causing mass panic and numerous car accidents, the beast was hunted by the police forces. Evading helicopters and other vehicles, the gargantuan ape spotted a brilliant beam of light in the distance. Believing it to be Jill’s flashlight, he headed directly for it. However, the light was actually a floodlight at an amusement park.
Upon his arrival, the beast caused instant chaos. Hundreds began to flee and fires began to rage, but both Jill and Strasser caught up with him. As the poacher tried to kill his friend, the ape tossed the man into the air where he landed on an electrical transformer and was instantly killed. The police arrived on the scene and cornered the ape, but the screams of a terrified child began to ring through the air. Stranded at the highest point of a Ferris wheel that was on fire, a young boy looked down in horror.
Ignoring the police officers, Joe turned and began to climb the Ferris wheel. O’Hara and Jill convinced the police to hold their fire as the beast rescued the boy. However, just as he grabbed the child, the Ferris wheel began to fall! Landing hard on his back, the ape managed to save the innocent life. His brave heroism secured him from execution and he was returned to his native home of Africa, but now his mountain was deemed a natural reserve. There would be no more poaching or hunting of any kind in his domain.
