History: Dr. Arliss Loveless, a deranged and former scientist for the Confederate Army, vowed vengeance after his lower torso was blown off during the Civil War. After the surrender, it was believed he had died. However, the madman had simply gone into hiding. In total secrecy, he developed ties in Europe and Mexico as he plotted to overthrow the American government. Kidnapping the most brilliant minds in the country, he began to create a new generatation of weaponry. And none of his machines were as impressive as the eighty-foot, mechanical spider.
As President Grant inaugurated the first transcontinental railroad, Loveless and his machine appeared. Blasting the president’s train to bits, the twisted scientist demanded the total surrender of the United States army. At the same time, both Captain James West of the U.S. army and Artemus Gordon of the U.S. Marshalls returned to foil the madman’s scheme. Unfortunately, their plan failed. James West was shot pointblank and both Artemus and the president were captured.
Upon their return to Spider Canyon, West once again returned. As chaos unfolded, Loveless fled with the president in tow. Riding aboard the mechanical spider, he began to fire upon innocent towns in an attempt to force the president to sign the surrender. As the spider destroyed everything in its path, Artemus and Jim West flew in onboard a makeshift glider. Dropping bombs onto the machine, they barely managed to damage it before being shot down by its gatling guns. Crashing down on the command deck, the pair of heroes battled the spider’s masters. Soon left without a pilot, and with Artemus lacking the knowledge of its controls, the machine nearly walked off a cliff before coming to a stop. After Loveless was dropped thousands of feet to his death, the spider was recovered. The government of the United States was safe and the new Secret Service, acting under the direct command of the president, would ride into future missions onboard the eight-legged machine.
