First Appearance: The Monster That Challenged the World (1957)
Human Kills: 9
Fight Record: None
Home World: Earth
Origin: United States (California, Salton Sea)
Type: Prehistoric
History: An earthquake opened a fissure in the earth exposing the dried eggs of the Deep Sea Gornaxis to water for the first time in millions of years. Because of the radioactivity of the water that came in contact with the eggs, the formerly inert material came to life and began to hatch! Once fully formed, the monsters set to finding food and producing more of themselves as their simplistic animal natures inclined them to do. They first came to the attention of the military when one of their kind consumed several military personal on a parachuting test.
The sea was quarantined, but a pair of swimmers who ignored the danger paid the ultimate price for their recklessness. Afterwards, the Navy sent a pair of divers checking for radioactivity near the sight of the disappearing swimmers. They found radioactivity in a sample of slime left at the scene of the first attack and hoped to clue in on the source of the problem with their Geiger counters. They managed to find a newly opened trench in the lake that nearly doubled its original depth of sixty-five feet, going down to well over a hundred feet!
The divers discovered a radioactive, jelly-like egg attached to the seaweed. After retrieving it, one of the divers was attacked by one of the creatures and quickly drained of his fluids!
With a newly acquired sample, the navy set into action to prevent the animal’s spread, fearing it would reach the All American Canal and then the ocean, where it would breed and feed and eventually threaten all of humanity! A patrol was set up around the Salton Sea to run all day and night, but failed to prevent the escape of the creatures due to the presence of an underground river they gained access to.
The military intensified the search for the creatures, locking down the canal system as best they could, bringing in civilian authorities to help.
At the lab, the daughter of the lab’s secretary, Sandy, unfortunately altered the temperature of a pool where the only sample of the creatures was held, believing it to be the overall air conditioning unit. Inside its tank, the egg began to grow!
With the canal’s monitored, human incompetence prevented the creatures from being located until an old map came to the military’s attention detailing a line of wells that the Native Americans dug along an underwater river.
A slick of slime was found near one of the well entrances, leading the military to the creatures. Planting explosives around the sleeping monsters, the military destroyed the monsters, all but the one in the lab, which had finally grown to adulthood.
Sandy went to check on the rabbits she had grown so fond of, only to find them gone, their cages drenched in slime, and the Deep Sea Gornaxis standing behind her! The mother managed to distract the creature long enough to reach her daughter, but both soon find themselves trapped in the nearby closet. They barricaded it as best they could, but the creature slowly began to break through, ripping the wooden door apart with its deadly mandibles.
All hope seems lost until commander Twillinger and Dr. Johns arrived, completely by accident, to discover the scene. The commander gained the beast’s attention with a fire extinguisher, while the scientist fled for help. Though it allowed Gail and Sandy to escape from the closet, it proved ineffectual in causing the creature harm. As the extinguisher ran dry, the commander tore free a steam hose from the floor and began dousing it with the steam! As the beast roared, several soldiers rushed into the lab, open firing! As bullets ripped across its body, the last of the underwater killers fell to the floor, their species once again labeled as extinct.
