History: The illegal usage of mercury by a paper mill caused not only stillbirths and freakism in both humans and animals, but a lone grizzly bear had also been mutated and severely altered by the metal. The monster stalked the forests of Maine, feeding on humans and animals alike, and killing anything unlucky enough to be caught in her way. To make matters worse, the land dispute between the mill and native Americans had gained the attention of the government who called on Dr. Robert Verne and his wife Maggie to help decide on who owns the land on the verdict of an environmental report.
As the mystery unfolded, the killer bear attacked a small family of innocent campers. The resulting search for more evidence soon gave way to the discovery of two mutant bear cubs, one of them alive! The cubs were both taken back to M' Rai's, the local Indian elder, camp. When the mill's owner and sheriff finally arrived, so did the towering juggernaut of Katahdin, the beast of legend and folklore of the tribes. The monster rampaged, destroying and killing anyone in her path that didn't make it to tunnels beneath the camp. The mother gathered up her dead cub and then returned to the forests.
The group of survivors headed back to the village while Isley, the owner of the paper mill, hiked up the mountain to the radio tower. Unluckily for the band of humans, Katahdin captured Isley just as he reached the tower, and the monster was once again on the chase of the humans that had her last surviving cub. The mutation crashed their only means of escape and chased the small group into the water.
M' Rai tried to use his chants to make the ferocious animal flee, but he too met a terrible demise. The young cub was dropped into the water, drowning it as it tried to bite Maggie. The monster continued on through the water, chasing the now band of four into the couple's cabin, and becoming even more enraged when discovering her dead cub.
Once inside, the group tried their best to barricade themselves in, but Katahdin's strength easily ripped through the wooden structure! Shotgun blasts did little more then enrage her, and the creature continued her relentless assault, swatting away and killing John Hawks whom managed to drive an arrow into it. The creature then hoisted Robert up, hoping to crush him in a deadly bear hug, but the doctor managed to grip the arrow and start stabbing it into Katahdin's throat and face, eventually making her fall back into the water!
The monster still moving, Robert leaped into the water and began to furiously stab away until she finally vanished beneath the water. The fearsome behemoth was killed, but as morning crept across the landscape, another disfigured face reared upward and roared. The curse the paper mill had put on this beautiful land had only just begun.
